Former Scottish National Party chief executive Peter Murrell has pleaded guilty to embezzling more than £400,000 from SNP funds during his time with the party.

Murrell entered the guilty plea at the High Court in Edinburgh on Monday in connection with the long-running Police Scotland investigation known as Operation Branchform.

According to court proceedings widely reported by national media outlets, Murrell admitted embezzling £400,310.65 between 2010 and 2023. Prosecutors alleged the money was used on personal purchases including vehicles, a motorhome and luxury goods.

Murrell, the estranged former husband of former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, was remanded in custody ahead of sentencing, which is expected next month.

Police Scotland said the investigation had involved “extensive enquiries” over several years.

Nicola Sturgeon had previously been arrested and questioned as part of the investigation, but Police Scotland later confirmed she would face no action and had been cleared of wrongdoing.
