Greater Manchester Police have arrested five people in Tameside today as part of a major investigation into alleged election fraud during the May 2026 local elections.
The arrests mark a significant development in what appears to be a coordinated probe into candidate nominations in the St Peter’s ward of Tameside Council.
Details of the Arrests
According to Greater Manchester Police, four men and one woman, aged between 23 and 47, were arrested at addresses in Tameside on the morning of Thursday 21st May 2026.
All five individuals are currently in custody on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud. No charges have been made at this stage, and police enquiries remain ongoing.
What is the Investigation About?
The investigation centres on alleged irregularities in how candidates were nominated and represented in the St Peter’s ward during the recent local elections.
Concerns were raised about “fake” independent candidates potentially being used to split votes — a tactic sometimes referred to as vote splitting or spoiler candidates. Local media outlet Manchester Mill had previously highlighted these issues before the election.
Police Statement

Police have not ruled out further arrests.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) will review evidence once interviews are complete to decide on any charges.
